Neighborhood Spotlight: Fairmount

It’s no secret that the Delaware Valley is a great place to live.  But how do you know which neighborhood is right for you? To help you decide, we’ll profile a different region each month, and include a few available listings to boot.  We’ll give you our take on what makes it a great neighborhood, ranging from stellar restaurants and upcoming activities to the latest information on housing prices and featured listings.  This month, check out the Fairmount section of Philadelphia.  We’ll think you’ll agree it’s one of the Great Neighborhoods to live, eat and play.

The Fairmount section of Philadelphia is part of the beautiful Art Museum Area. It is situated just Northwest of Center City, making it a convenient walk to City Hall.  This section of Philadelphia is close to Kelly Drive, the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, I-76 and many forms of public transportation.

Fairmount offers several tourist attractions, including Fairmount Park, the largest urban park in the world.  It encompasses 9,200 acres and includes 63 neighborhood and regional parks. It’s the perfect place for long walks, picnics, hiking, and site seeing!

The Philadelphia Art Museum is another hot spot in this neighborhood. Located at the end of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, this museum stands as one of the great art institutions of the world. In the more than 125 years since its founding, it has grown far beyond the limits originally set for it. Today, the Museum houses over 225,000 works of art encompassing some of the greatest achievements of human creativity, and offers a wealth of exhibitions and educational programs for a public of all ages. Walk_along_Kelly_DriveA short walk from the Philadelphia Art Museum you will find Kelly Drive, a gorgeous four mile winding road extending from the Art Museum to the East Falls section of Philadelphia. You’ll find this scenic road filled with runners, cyclists, walkers and boat rowers in the warmer months.  The beautiful landscape surrounding the sidewalks is breathtaking and almost always occupied.

For you animal lovers out there – the Fairmount area has several dog parks. One of many locals’ favorite dog parks is located right on Kelly Drive!

The famous Eastern State Penitentiary, which is a U.S. National Historic Landmark, is a former prison located in the Fairmount section of Philadelphia and was operational from 1829 until 1971. Notorious criminals such as bank robber Willie Sutton and Al Capone were held inside its unique wagon wheel design. When the building was erected it was the largest and most expensive public structure ever constructed, quickly becoming a model for more than 300 prisons worldwide. This landmark is a hot spot during the Halloween season, bringing in thousands of tourists for Terror Behind the Walls. This annual haunted exhibit runs from September through November and consists of hundreds of actors dressed up as zombie prisoners. This successful exhibit has been scaring people for years!
